Fare Old Bill for Ferrying Grandkids

Oct 22, 2007

GRANDPARENTS clock up 3.8billion miles a year ferrying their grandkids around by car, according to a survey.

They provide a UK taxi service that would be worth pounds 10.8billion - equal to pounds 3160 each - a year if they set the meters running.

The survey for car insurers Sheilas' Wheels found more than 3.4million grandparents regularly drive the kids around.

They cover an average of 1100 miles each a year.

Some 48 per cent said the reason they helped out was because they loved spending time with their grandchildren.

But one in five resented the burden, believing their children took advantage of them.
