IRISH DAILY Mirror COMMENT: Show Death Trap Cars the Red Light Now

Oct 17, 2007

THE Government has no option but to act to take death-trap cars off our roads.

Shock figures revealed in the Dail yesterday show there were 1,700 accidents last year involving uninsured cars from Eastern Europe.

Workers from these countries are welcome to come and work here.

But many of these drivers are only insured in their home country, which does not cover them in Ireland.

Driving without insurance is a serious crime that costs law- abiding motorists millions of euro each year.

What's worse, many of these vehicles are dangerous bangers that are more likely to cause accidents.

People from abroad can wait up to two years to put an NCT on their car to prove that it is roadworthy.

The Government must now empower Gardai to seize cars with no insurance - regardless of who is behind the wheel.

Seemingly a day doesn't go by when a family wakes up to discover one of their relatives has been taken from them in a road tragedy.

We have come a long way in halting the carnage on our roads.

But this new loophole must be closed without delay before somebody else needlessly dies.
